Tach, Speedo & indicator Question
Hope you guys don't get tried of my dumb questions. Working on a '76 XLCH IronHead. I got my 'Clymer' manual in. But it's no help on this question. I did see on an old post where IronMick said two manuals needed are:
99484-7,1970-1978 SERVICE MANUAL and
99451-78B, 1954-1978 PARTS CATALOG.
Got them on order now. Thanks Mick for all that you do.
In the mean time there are some parts on Ebay closing out this week that I like and need to know which set up is right for my bike.
My bike came only with two indicator lights mounted on the cover that hold on the head light. One for generator and one for the oil. It came without a Speedometer or Tachometer. Would the tach be electric or cable driven? If by cable where does it connect to the engine? Would my bike have had a neutral indicator and a High beam indicator?
I'm looking at two kinds of brackets.
If you can find the time to look, which would be correct?

Or

The second one I'm looking at a really nice set with gauges and lights. Guy said he was going to put it on a '75. I'm wondering if I would still be be able to see the Gen and Oil lights with that one?
Also, looking for a good parts suppler. I haven't located a place to get a kit to rebuild the Generator yet.

The bracket in your first link is correct for your 1978. The second one is not correct.
There are no rebuild kits for the gen. You can buy new brushes - these are usually the only parts that need replacing. The rest can be just cleaned up.
No neutral light on any IronHeads.
The tach is mechanical [first electronic tach was 1981]. The hi-beam indicator light is in the tach face [why? who knows :?). The cable connects on the right side engine case, near the front, behind the cam cover.
You can connect an electronic tach - just run the wire to the correct side of the ignition coil [not the 12 volt side; rather the side with the wire from the points].
