RE: 1982 Sportster Anniv ED
I had one of these brand new in 1982. I should have never gotten rid of it. I have been eyeballin one on ebay but I don't mind showing it as I am pretty sure I won't be going for it.
Mind was exactly like this one. With the gloss black engine cases. Luv'd this bike. Many memories all over California in the 80's with the babe. The guy posting this one also included some history and specifics on the bike.

I sent him an email asking where he got the specific info on his bike. I hope he replies. His is in great shape with even less miles than mine, (about 16K on mine) but his is more stock than mine. I have all the stock parts to return it to box stock that I have save for the next owner after I die.

I know this is an old post, but I hope someone responds. I have a 82 Anniversary 1000 XL. I am trying to find the emblem for the side of the bike. Mine has the emblem on the fender. I would love to hear more on how many were made and where I d=could possibly start looking for that emblem. Thanks

First you need to buy a copy of the Factory Parts Catalog, which is part number 99451-85A. Put the part number into the eBay and Google searches, or buy from a local HD shop or indie motorcycle shop.
The catalog lists virtually every part on the bike, with the part number for each and has schematic diagrams showing each part and its relationship to other parts.
There is a page near the end specifically for anniversary edition parts. There is no mention of any decal for the starter motor. What makes you think there should be one? Please post a pic or whatever info you have. Pic's are most important for these things.
Once you have the catalog you can search Google, eBay and other sources for hard to find parts. There are a few sellers who specialize in these things but you must have the part number to ask about them.
You also should get the Factory Service Manual 99484-85. This is essential for doing even the simplest required, regular maintenance.

i have a 1982 xlsa roadster anniversary. usually the numbers discrepency is between the sportster and the roadster. the difference between the sportster and roadster is the roadster has a dark claret and pewter paint not red and black. a 3.6 gallon tank, sissy bar, frnt crash bar and highway pegs stock and black engine casing. there were 778 xlsa (anniversary) roadsters produced with the first going to the harley davidson museum and 2 going to harley executives. there were 932 xlha (anniversary) sportsters produced. this the engine was not painted. all in 1982 had the front eagle emblem on the front fender signifying the company buy back from AMF. only year for this emblem. other emblems for the 1982 roadster anniversary are front fork bar designating xlsa anniversary, 25th anniversary xl logo timing cover and battery cover. i have done some extensive research and production numbers are from Harley Davidson themselves. you can call Harley Davidson Motor Division in Milwaukee or email your vin and they will send you information on your specific motorcycle. mine was ordered and produced on April 1st 1982 so i call her the JOKESTER. i also graduated in 1982 so present to me.
