There is always a market for a "vintage" Harley. Even an AMF! For all the "bad press" they get, they instituted a QA program and got rid of the tenured mucks who didn't give one which improved the product line. The bad thing they did was to use HD profits to further other AMF ventures. Anyways, like my grand daddy used to say, "Put a worm on the hook and see if the fish are biting!" Or hang onto it for a few more years, they only get better with age. {Okay, he didn't really say anything except "get me another beer, ya little s-!" but it sounds more colorful...}

Old Sportsters and FXs are really neat to collect, tinker with and restore, if you have most of the stock parts, much can be rechromed and many parts are available thorugh Ebay, Sportster Specialties in L..A, Dragster Stew's in Las Vegas and Debrix Cycles. Others might consider building a "True" chopper, as most of the choppers in that era, were indeed sportsters and they were killer.
I am still redoing my 73 ,today, I ordered a chrome front banana calipher, chrome axle nuts assemblly and brake backing plate, all on sale, saved over $200 from what they wanted 3 months ago. It is a task, but I enjoy it.
Obviously these older bikes are for hobby, show and investment if done correctly. There is a Vintage Auction here in Las Vegas Jan 8-10
www.mid-america.com I have seen a couple of 1969 Sportsters go for 10K +( they were mint mind you) and a few years back a stock 1966 XLH brought $16,000. So you never know.
The british bikes have been taking most of the $$$ interest the last 5-7 years, making other brands more affordable. A couple of years ago a Kawasaki triple restored would go for $2k, the last couple of years they average between 8-12k. Pricey!
Gunnut, go ahead post some pics, it would be very interesting to see another original owner's scoot in the raw. Maybe you'll get some pointers or an offer if that is what you are looking for.
I will get some updated pics of mine, but I will enclude another shot of a few years ago, for fun
