Default 1983 generator questions

i need to rebuild the generator in my 83 ironhead. been looking in j+p to get parts, but i guess the generator changed in 1982-84 from previous styles. i was wondering if the parts would fit also for the year mine is. if anyone out there has rebuilt a generator from the 82-84 i would be thrilled if you could give me some heads up on the parts.

thanks,
83 ironhead

The first place you need to start is to get yourself a factory manual, if you do not have one. Make sure it is a factory manual, not a Clymer or some such. This will give you the picture of the parts involved. I have information on the years up to 1974, so 1983 may be different. However, a generator is a generator, so that might not be the case.
If you want some info on the 1974 generator, send me an email and I can email you a PDF file on it.

Sporty generators were listed as 59 to 81 and 82 to early 84, I do not have a factory manual for your year, only a Clymers. Clymers isn't bad as far as diagrams but does not list part numbers as the factory manual (which definitely helps is parts interchange). Got to looking at both J&P catalogs (Vintage and Big Book) and they cover Sporty parts up until 1981...which means that parts will probably not be interchangeable with yours. Don't think J&P can help.......

I then took a look at V-Twin catalog. On page 1192 they list parts for your generator.

Also looked in Custom Chrome, Antique Cycle Supply, Drag Specialties, Jireh Cycles...they all stop at 81 for your bike.

Also ran into tis problem, a 75 XLH that I was working on came with the later model generator (82-84) installed, which I believe were the Hatachis, and they are totally different from the earlier models (58-81). Internal parts are not the same so dont waste your time trying.
J&P does offer the brush sets for the later year, but not a complete rebuild kit. Ended up replacing the generaor with a earlier year model (58-81) that I could easily find parts for from just about anywhere.
