Oil Diagram for a 74 sportster (ironhead)
#1

Here is what the factory service manual has showing the oil connections on the engine.
They mislabeled item #14 and #15 and I have corrected that with my note...........
I have never seen an oil diagram from the factory that would read like an electrical wiring diagram.
That is what the examples offered so far attempt to show, but one, they are for models later than 1974, and two, they are confusing (for me) to look at with all the hoses going everywhere. The oil pump was changed sometime in or after 1977, so a 1974 pump is a different animal.

do I connect the vent lines
I guess my basic question is.. would you connect the engin vent line to the oil tank (vent line)?
or do you let the two lines just vent to ground as I have now.. but I'm loosing alot of oil so I need to figure out how to fix that if they are not connected together..

The vent on the engine needs a hose connected to it.
The other end of that hose gets connected to the oil tank vent nipple on the oil tank.
Under no means should either vent be allowed to drip onto the ground. They must be connected together using a hose.
