81 sportster 1000 trans problems
hey guys new here. just got this bike. not my first bike but kinda new to tearing down an ironhead like this. im a mechanic at a car dealer and have been all my life. but just need some input here before i go tearing this down and maybe some advice on if this is a common problem. thanks in advance. well the other day i was ridin and began hearing a kind of grindin/ gear rattleing noise when im in neutral and in first. but after you get riding and go into second or above it goes away. well now yesterday when i was riding it started to almost like jump teeth on a gear and jerk when i was on it hard in first. now its getting stuck in every gear a put it in. made it home and now its stuck in first and wont move. so far i pulled the primary and there was lots of metal chunks in the oil. so im thinkin its in the trans and maybe a bent shift fork or something. any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
thanks

Damn, that stinks! So what's the history on the bike? Just had a trans rebuild before you bought it?
Anyway, it sounds like you hit the nail on the head, are the gear teeth still intact on the clutch shell and engine sprocket?
If you don't already have a FSM for the bike, nows a good time pick one up.
Mick will be here shortly to post a bunch on links for overhauling your trans, he's a wealth of knowledge on these bikes.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Ironheads, there an awesome old beast.
