Default Timing marks on flywheel

Im trying to set my timing on my 1968 xlch 900 and I also have the distributer out of it. My question is I have a line mark and a single dot on my flywheel which mark should I reinstall the distributer on and how do I do it? Thanks

I can help only partly. You need to know which mark is Top Dead Center for the front cylinder [TDC]. Remove the plugs, put it in 4th gear, rotate the engine until the front cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke [thumb over plug hole as you rotate, feel the pressure]; then look in the hole to see which mark is there.

Sorry i have no experience with the mag/distributer etc.

compression stroke on the front cylinder; watch for the line, that is your mark.

this is the advanced timing mark.

as you install the CB before the gears mesh turn the shaft CCW 60degrees from the point where the fibre meets the mark on the shaft; then slide it in; check to see how close the mark is to the fibre block if it doesn't align closely then lift the CB and turn the shaft one tooth in the direction it needs to go to align the mark with the rubbing block. Then tighten the screws and align the marks and tighten the base nuts.

If the bar is the front cylinder advance timing mark then the dot would be the front cylinder TDC mark. You can verify this by simply looking into the timing and spark plug holes with things lined up appropriately.
