Default M8 Fuel Mileage

Well i was a little concern when I first got my Road Glide Ultra i was getting fuel mileage in the mid 30s while breaking it in. As i put more miles on 2500 its steady improving my last tank of fuel got me 44 mpg plus my riding and shifting is getting much better. Comming off a 2010 Goldwing i never had to shift has much as the Harley but I really love the Road Glide much better she has plenty of power and i love the way it Handles. I do ride pretty hard and average 75 to 80 on the highways and 5 to 10 mph faster on the streets. I like to stay away from traffic on my own so other cant hurt me.

What Kind of MPG are you other M8 owners getting.

I'm not getting very good mileage either but I am cranking the throttle more often to hear the engine sing.

Default Mpg

45 mpg if I ride at a "normal" pace and, so far, 40 if not.

We've seen low-mid 40s on our test bike and this have pretty much been the norm with our customers.

My old 14 Limited usually averaged around 42 mpg. So far, with 1,000 miles, my 17 Limited is averaging about 39 mpg. But since the 14 read 4% fast and the 17 reads correctly, I'm getting about the same mpg as the 14. It should get better with more miles.

honest to God, I have never tracked fuel mileage in 12 years, 7 bikes and well over 100,000 miles.. I just never cared, rode the way I like to and figured it would be less than the stated rating because of that

I have put 6,400 on my RGS M8. After the 1K I got 52 on average and as high as 56 mpg on touring across the country.

However with winter gas and temps under 40 I am getting 48. I suspect it is like my oil cooled sportsters that I need to cover the oil cooler to get the engine up to full temp for the ECM to quit running the enrichener. And yes I do ride all winter.

I plan on testing mpg in the next few rides to see if it improves with the oil cooler covered. That worked on the Sportsters and Buell. They all ran 50 mpg until very cold weather and dropped to 40 until I realized that I needed to cover the cooler.

I should add that I use E10 87 octane from day one. Also 99% of my riding is on highways and not city.

I use mpg as a sensor for engine health. Only when every tuning parameter is optimal can the bike get the top mpg. Typically if the mileage drops any at all the most likely cause is the air filter. I have cleaned them prior to a 4K trip and had the mpg drop at 2K from the dust in the desert S.W. I have have checked mpg on several dozens of bikes for decades and it has been a great benefit.

Example: I leave the DTE display on instead of the odo or trip whatever. Pull into a station and the six gallon tank takes 5 gallons. When I start the engine the DTE reads 300 miles which translates to 50 mpg average. On the M8 it was always over 300 to 336.

The M8 combined average is reported by H-D to be 45 mpg as apposed to the TC of 42.

With motorcycles, fuel economy is not about the cost of gasoline. It's about how much range you get out if a tank.
