OK .. looks like Geico is the way for me and thanks for the advice.

Took my excess out to 1000 and raised my UM to 300k and dropped the property damage to 10k which was the minimum. Medical still 250/500k.

Looks like the UM is the killer with any policy and with me riding in Florida (old ladies everywhere) and from reading of the horror stories then it is a must. Not sure of Geico are just cheaper because they now I am with Progressive presently but they came in at $1250 with better coverage. Same coverage from Progressive was $2320 ?.

Some states allow you to stack UM coverage - it appears that Florida does. I am not an attorney in Florida and am not familiar with Florida law, so this is just my impression of how stacking in Florida would work ....

Lets say you insure two vehicles through GEICO, and each vehicle is covered with $100,000 of UM coverage, and you get in an accident. You will have $200,000 of UM coverage if you paid for stacked insurance, and only $100,000 if you purchased un-stacked coverage. Of course, stacked coverage will cost somewhat more than unstacked.

The question I have is what kind and what value of insurance do you guys have because compared with the UK the insurance in the USA is extremely complicated. In the UK we pay for comprehensive and it covers everything and is quite cheap as my Heritage Softail in London costs me approx $250 per annum whereas my Road King in the US is costing me $1550 per annum.

I think that I may be misunderstanding what I am purchasing in the US, I am with Progressive.

What level of insurance is commonsense and what should I be asking for when my renewal is due in July.

Thx ..
i know it ouy of subject but if u r here just 4-6 weeks. Why not just sell it and go rent feom hd . It cost only around 75$ a day or lesd in summer . They aleays have disxount . Am sure you will not ride it everyday. This is just another option

Hi Ultra .. just not the same riding a bike that isn't your pride and joy and feels apart of you. I don't know about you but I always feel safer and more familiar on my own bikes as I know their quirks and how they handle.

I tend to do long rides and so I generally freight my bike and ride it back to my place in Miami and I am not sure that HD in New Orleans would let me ride it to Asheville and then down to Miami and return at a HD dealer in Miami.

The bike is the cheap part !! ... try keeping a boat (BOAT - Bring Out Another Thousand) and an apartment with the association fees and Florida property taxes.

As I get older and my daughter eventually goes to university (2 more years) then I will spend more time in Miami and use it the place 6 months or more a year rather than just a few weeks.

I have good under ground parking in Miami so the bike is covered and there is security so safety wise I am fine.

I agree it would be cheaper but just not the same.

Underground parking in Miami? Is that, like, in a sinkhole??

Mike, couple of things. Does the socialized medical of the UK cover you in the event of sickness or injury in a foreign country? Or, do you purchase traveler's insurance every time you come to the US? If you are covered for any and all medical costs while here then I recommend you DROP all "uninsured motorist" coverage. You don't need it! The only people that should include uninsured motorist coverage are ones that have no or very poor personal health/medical insurance. Next .... your premium is REALLY high. That could be because of all or some of the following: You are not a legal resident of Florida. Miami is probably number one in vehicle theft in this country. Miami has one of the highest rates of crazy drivers in this country. And it's not the old retired folks. Latins have very little patience when behind the wheel of a vehicle. I am from Miami and all of us who rode motorcycles joked about it not being a case of if, but rather of when. If you ride there long enough some idiot there is going to knock you down. Lastly .... I have a 2010 Electra Glide and I am with Progressive with excellent coverage which includes "New bike replacement" in case of theft or total loss. My premium is approximately $350 per year.

Hi Larry ... I am not too sure why the premium is so high as I have also a homeowners deduction of $350 for owning property in Miami. I think it i ste uninsured drivers part that is the killer.

My travel insurance covers me for medical cover if I am in inpatient and need to call them to see if it covers broken arms etc which do not necessarily mean you stay in overnight but may rack up costs in the USA if they need to set the break and place a cast on the arm etc. My inpatient cover is like 20,000,000 and life and loss of limb above the wrist and ankle - not sure what happens if you lose a foot or wrist as they must term that a minor loss !.

My bike whilst I love it to bits is not may main concern as I can replace that - just the hospitalization part of things being a none domicile it gets a little complicated. I think the best thing is that I call my insurance company here and as you say maybe drop the uninsured motorist if my medical insurance from the UK covers me.

I really hear what you are saying about Florida and mores so Miami as I rode from New York where I bought my bike to Miami and it wasn't until I got to Ft Lauderdale that became worried and saw the vast difference between the standards of driving.

$1550 a year???? Your joking right? I have a 97 FLSTC with full coverage including $4000 of accessories and I think I only pay something like $150 (give or take) a year.

My advice though is to dump Progressive to begin with, they know very little about bikes, and go with a Bike Specialist who understands them.

I'll stay with my $350 a year Progressive. I have great coverage and the "new bike replacement" means if my bike is stolen or totaled I pick out a brand new current year of my model. Most insurance company's rates vary greatly from location to location. I'm sure that one of the reasons yours is so low is the typical length of your riding season. Here in Florida we never stop!

Ok guys ... thanks for all the advice and in the end stayed with Progressive but managed to get down to $581 per year by paying for the year upfront.
Tried Geico and the usual suspects but they were not even willing to insure as I hold an overseas license whereas Progressive had no issue with that.
The renewal when it came in was a whopping $1588 but the guy on the phone manage to get me more sensible insurance and he dropped completely the Non Insured Motorist section as it basically only covers me or any out of pocket expenses but my annual travel insurance from the UK does that better and covers me on the bike whilst I am wearing my helmet which I do anyway.
Thx for the tips .. just arrived back for a couple of weeks so a ride from Miami to Naples along Alligator I am having on Sat morning and staying over in a hotel for a few brewski's before returning Sunday late.
