Is it normal to need a "Springer overhaul" at 10,000 miles?
Yes, every 10,000 miles. The rocker bushings become loose and need lubed, tighten or replaced. If you go longer than that you risk damage to the springer front end then that runs $$$$$!

Its actually more that they need to be lubed. When they re-introduced the springer front end they did not design in zirc fittings (like were on the earlier pre-49 units) that allow you to keep the units lubed.
Its not a difficult operation but it is a PITA since you have to remove the caliper, tire and fender to isolate the springer forks. I would imagine the dealer charges big bucks for that service because it does take some time.
So, its not that the springer front end needs to be completely "overhauled"; its that the attention to the rockers is impoortant for overall longevity of the front end. Just part of the regualr service plan...kinda like replacing fork oil very 10k, but just a bit more work.
