Default Sturgis Vendors Question

During the rally are there vendors that are working on bikes installing accessories, cam swaps, etc? Just curious if I should be saving extra cash up for next years trip.

Thanks!

I have seen tires, lights, chrome and air horns installed while you wait but never saw or heard of internal engine, tranny stuff being upgraded. I know you can purchase just about anything but getting installed is different story. There are also several places doing oil changes and minor service items like that.

Black Hills HD in Rapid City has extra mechanics on duty working long hours but they are there to keep all the break downs fixed. When you bring 400,000 bikes to the same area, things are gonna break!! I doubt they want any cam shaft changes during rally time. It may be worth calling them to find out for sure as I may not know what I am talking about. Maybe they want the extra work then??

If I were you, and was looking to change cams, I would go ahead and save the money, get the job done at home and then enjoy the new power riding at the rally.

Cheers Bro

i would not want a mechanic that is already swamped installing anything on my bike. do it over the winter when dealers are looking for business.

Only reason i ask is because we are traveling from Canada. Just thought it may be a good time to save a bunch if money, as that stuff is a lot more expensive here.

My experience is that venders won't do internal work at rallies, too many variables

There has to be a decent reputable independent Harley mechanic somewhere in your vicinity. Ask around and get to know him and give him your business. I would never let anyone I didn't know to be reputable and reliable open my cam chest and fiddle around. Some rally vendors will install EFI upgrades but I would not even do that. A solid relationship with a local independent makes for a happy Harley.

You might consider leaving a bit early. You could line up a dealer somewhere on your route, ahead of time, for the work.

Not sure about cams but there are a lot of vendors on the Rapid City HD location that fit their parts
