Novice Heritage Rider

I took the basic riding class on a HD Street 500 and then bought a Dyna. My riding coach said "just because you have all that power doesn't mean you have to use it right away."
I learned to ride on the Dyna...never regretted starting with a big bike. Be careful and keep your mind on what you are doing at all times and you should be okay.

Welcome...my opinion = don't buy your dream bike as a learner ride. I graduated from mini-bikes, to dirt bikes, to small street & eventually big street (gradually). Honed riding skills along the way helped migrate from bike to bike class.
Had a friend buy her dream bike...dumped it multiple times while getting a feel for riding. Even after BRC and countless outings she still struggled...eventually sold and now doesn't care to ride.
I know everyone's different and you might do well...simply stating my "opinion."

Good choice - a softail is pretty easy to ride. Just get used to the size and weight and remember not to use the front break at low speed, especially if the forks are turned. When I first got my softail standard, I nearly put it down at my first gas stop by using the front brake in the gas station parking lot - I could do that with my old sportster.
