Default Loss of power

I have 14 SGS took a 600km trip yesterday that included climbing up to 5000ft, during the trip power was normal and the climb was gradual the temp was 30c which was warm. During the last climb up a long hill I barely had enough power to pass, I read the the ECM should compensate for this but it sure didn't feel like it. When I got back down to sea level power was back to normal, this is my first EFI bike and not sure if this is normal. Thanks for any input.

The air is thinner at higher altitudes and the ECM does compensate for that by leaning the AFR. Otherwise, it would run too rich. But remember that there is still less air up high so performance does decrease even though the AFR has been compensated for. The only other way around that is forced induction; turbocharging or supercharging.

Coming back from Sturgis, we went over Beartooth Pass (almost 11,000 feet elev). Ended up having to pass at least 7 or 8 trucks pulling travel trailers.

Was almost 30 celsius (much cooler as we went up)

Had lots of power to pass.....

Mind you, all of us have Stage 1 done on the bikes.

Not sure this helps. Check to see if there are any codes thrown?

I think stage one filter tune and pipes definitely provide better power under all circumstances We have some forum members from areas at altitude who can provide additional info

Also, warm air temperature effectively lowers the air density so higher altitudes combined with higher temps compound the problem.

If I remember correctly, you lose 2% per 1000 ft in altitude.

Yep..I think it's actually 3%. So 5,000 ft, 100 hp becomes 85.

Well if its 3% it sure felt a lot more than that I had the throttle WO and I was not gaining any speed there was nothing left, I don't remember the RPM or speed as I was in a very high speed tight corner and needed to keep my eyes where I was going. This happened about a month ago under very similar circumstances.

Just got back this weekend from a trip thru northern New Mexico with some mountain passes. Due to elevation it was down on power if I tried to keep it in 6th but I learned to downshift it and ran it like a two-stroke. Grabbed a handful and rung its neck up some passes and had a blast listening to it. It didn't complain a bit!
