I've only had my 2014 Ultra for less than a month but I'm finding that my lower back is aching. I suspect the seating position and my tendency to slouch a little.
Will a backrest sort this out?
Is it easy to get off the bike with a backrest in place?
I had the same issues. Swapped out the bars so they made me sit more upright. Helped a lot. I still get some discomfort but not as bad as before. I plan to add a back rest soon.
I also suffered from a sore back when I got my 06'. Say what you will, but I suspect a lot of it has to do with a lack of muscle usage in the area affected. MY back and butt adjusted to the stock configuration within about six months. I've had no issue since. Your body just needs time to adjust to the scoot.
I found the same thing on my SGS. I installed the adjustable rider back rest and troubles were gone.. Sending you a PM..

Plus 1 - backrest helped tremendously. The biggest difference for me was swapping out stock seat with the HD Signature Series rider seat with backrest. I find that the stock seats put too much pressure on my lower back / upper hip, and the HD Signature seat was just right with the backrest. I like the solo look, but if you ride 2-up they make a pillion for not a lot more that matches and is also comfortable.
Yafee MBB 12" in black. They help me sit more straight, less slouching. A back rest is on my short list tho.
The longer I ride the stock seat the better it is getting. It was like a rock and caused butt burn until I had over 5000 miles on it. Now I can go longer periods before I get discomfort.

Setups and a daily (older guy) exercise routine will help, baring no injuries and with docs approval of course. And there other good side affects that will come with also. Just sayin
If you're tall or big, you should try a seat that will move you back and up. The stock seating position is cramped for bigger guys and that gets your back in a weird "C" shape and causes a lot of discomfort in the lower back. I'm still searching for a saddle with a good fit myself.
I've had back surgery so I really feel your pain.. Backrest and air in rear shocks if adjustable. Just got back from a trip to Canada and the last day did 710 miles. No pain just a little stiff. What a bike!!
