I notice when I start the bike when it is cold, it makes a hell of noise starting.

It will bang and knock like it has no oil in it for about 1 second, then as the engine gets going, it goes away.

It is a solid sound like a rod knocking.

The engine is completely stock.

Could it be that when it gets oil, it quiets down?

Anyone else have a loud engine on startup that goes away?

 

The lifters in my '14 FLHTK clatter for less than a second when started cold. Is that what you're hearing? If so I don't think it is anything to worry about.

 

Yea, it could be.

I will pay more attention to it next time or two.

 

My FLHTCU does the same thing when it's about 40 out and sitting for a few hours....sounds like lifters to me.
I plan on asking my HOG buds if their 14's do it.

 

My 2014 FLHTK will get some clatter upon start up if I have not started it in a week or so. Not all the time but occasionally. Asked dealer and said lifters needed to be pumped up...

 

Oil drain down, I would keep an eye on them bikes. Just talked to a friend today he has a 2013 lifters replaced for the second time. Good luck

 

My 2012 Limited did that at cold start in the morning. Ok, the rest of the day. Sounded like a starving for oil.Not just lifter noise.I complained to Dealer Who said it was normal.Put 30,000 miles on that bike and traded for 2014.2014 does not sound that way at start up.

 

Did this just start when the weather turned cold? Also Ron how is that reverse working out? Any issues or is it working as expected.

 

I replaced my lifters with my cam swap at 900 miles on the clock and my bike is very quiet on startup as well as running. So far at over 5000 miles the GMR lifters are holding up well.

 

My 14 does it too.. ONLY now that's it cold though and I haven't started it all week. It's garaged unless it warms up a stray day or two for the winter until march or so.
