Default Bike to Bike comms

I'm interested in getting a set of wireless headsets. My only real concern is bike to bike comms. I'd like to have voice-activated or PTT functions, and I'd like it to be able to accommodate multiple riders. Cross-platform comms would be a plus, but not required.

Considering that I am not interested in listening to music, answering my phone, etc., what are my options, and which option is the best that is out there?

We used Blue Ant for years but this past year at Daytona discovered the Sena headsets that had more features, better range and cost less. It was time to replace our old technology Blues and we went with the Sena SHM5 model. Google it and you'll see it will do everything you want, is great quality and less expensive than Scala and some of the other brands out there.

Bike to bike is not a problem and Sena is a popular option.

You can't not sync any BT headset to the HD audio system. To get the PTT functions, you will have to add a custom harness and another Sena. Take a look at this thread: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...t-headset.html

Another vote for Senna. We have the SMH10. Works great.

I'm on a Street Glide, and my wife will probably be on one as well once she decides what to replace her Springer with, so we won't be using anything onboard the bikes. Sena and Scala both seemed to pop up a lot. I did a little reading on the Interphone F5MC as well. Anyone have any experience?

I use the Sena SMH20's as well, just to note they are not water proof, so the first site of rain you have to remove them and put them away. They work wonderfully and are easy to use. They claim to able to connect to any blue tooth device but we have not had success getting them to talk across to other brands.

Are they described by Senna as water resistant. There are many, many testimonials as to them being all that and more. I don't think they want to go so far as to say "water-proof" as completely submerging them will probably be an issue. I submit that if your helmet is under water, you have bigger fish to fry than whether or not you have functioning audio.

That said, I leave my SMH-10s on rain or shine with no issues. YMMV

Me and the wife uses the Scala G6 and have been very pleased. We have had them for about 4 years now. They last about 10 hrs on a charge, have rode in rain several times and never an issue. We do both wear FF and the sound is good.

I'm getting the same results with Scala G9's. Used them last year on a 9 hr ride to Daytona with four bikers linked. We talked quite a bit and they did not go dead. Real world range on the interstate was about 1/2 mile at best. But good enough. I'm happy.

We use the Sena SMH10 for both bike to bike and rider to passenger communication. They work well, although we don't typically use the voice activated function. They pair up to phones easily, giving you the option of answering calls should you choose, and listening to music through your phones. I think you can connect to at least four riders if I remember correctly. This past summer we used them all day every day for 9 days in Colorado and never had a battery die on us. I think the estimated range is something like 700 yards or so (maybe more) but we never had any issues with being out of range as long as we could see the other bike. One of the headsets did act up after a pretty heavy rain but after drying out was good to go.
