Default Pros and Cons of Saddlebag Lid Guards?

I've seen them and was considering adding them.

But in reality what are the pros and cons?

Which style do you like? And would you put the emblems on for looks or addition protection?

I would think 3 rails would be better protection but these are on older style bags. I haven't seen 3 rails on new bags.

IMO, I think they cover too much of the fine Harley paint job we paid so much for. Just the clear stick-on adhesive would prevent the accidental boot scuff from scratching the paint, and could be replaced after time. Harley sells them pre-cut to fit for easy application.

Also, a window film shop can install 3M clear film for less than $100 on bags and/or fenders, with a guarantee. Lots of options to keep that paint shining through...

I love mine. One reason I won't be buying a Rushmore for a long time. I like the way they look. Good anchor point for bungees. Rest soda cans on them.

I had them one my last two Ultras and don't have them on this one yet because I cant find any I like to fit the new bags. The wife gets boot marks on the bags from time to time and in all honesty my boots have hit them once or twice getting off the bike so they help a lot. JP Cycles made 1/2 length bars that I liked and used in the past. Cant find them for the new bags. It's all personal taste and desire.

Bob,

The top photo is for our newer bags Part #90200876 ($139.95) with the Ultra Medallion ($36.95) added. Of course they come in Limited too.

I think the medallions actually adds protection right where a boot might hit when the rider or passenger is getting on.

They have several other styles than just this plain one including with light kits.

The look seems vintage to me. I've admired them on so many of the older Ultra versions where these were stock.

Had them on my last ultra and put them on my new one.
I think they are great.

Can't find any Con's to them

Of course beauty is in the eye of the owner.

Thanks Johhny. I've seen those but don't particularly care for that look. Again, it's a personal taste thing. I really liked the half length bars and will patiently wait for JP cycles to get them made for the newer bags. I had to wait for the Kuryakyn passenger cup holder that bolts to the tour pack also. But it finally came out.

Maynard.

I like your choice of gold accents on your ride. I noticed you don't have the saddlebag guard rails but are using the lid rails.

I'll be installing my bag guard rails as soon as I can. Already have them. I think they add that classic look like my old '86 Tour Glide. And from the accident that I was involved in last September they did their job of saving the right, down side, saddlebag from being mangled and crushed.

I don't understand why Harley removed so much of the classic components from their Ultras? Sure it's less costly, so would not including fenders ... lol
