Particularly back in some of the early days of aviation, you were really taking your life in your hands to fly one. The kind of attention required to catch any issues before they really present themselves is up there with the kind of attention you'd have for a hot girlfriend. You needed to engage all senses to know if the machine was "healhty" or "sick". There's also probably some psychological coping going on too with humanizing the machine (anthropomorphism) to help settle the fear that "she won't let you down" when you have no choice but to fly ala: world wars.

I haven't named any of my bikes, this one included...but one of the first things I thought when I saw the Rushmore RoadGlide "face" was BENDER!!! of Futurama . Alternatively I silently acknowledge that it's a motorcycle blackhole cuz I've been drawn into it there's just no escaping
*maybe I should name my bike "Bender the Blackhole" lol

Naming "vehicles" goes back hundreds, if not thousands of years....
Ships have traditionally been named, as have boats.
What 3 ships carried Columbus' crew?
Yeah, you knew that....
I honestly can't think of all the names I've had for bikes and autos, My Dad had one we called "The Creaker"... and old merc with worn out suspension bushings, I delivered pizza out of a beater I called the Hooptie, my '85 Ford F150 4x4 ExCab was Maude...
