Default Interesting Discussion w/Dealer about modding 2017

Was told today that any 2017 engine mods other than HD Slip-ons or approved HD mods, voids the warranty. I said I'd just take them off and put on factory before bringing in. Reply was, Any warranty work requires an ECM download to be submitted before any work is approved. It will show any difference in fuel adjustments than what is a normal readings. Not sure if that is possible, but he had a rebuttal for pretty much anything I threw at him. Also said If readings are from a free flowing exhaust you better have a receipt from something that HD has that is approved.

I guess Maybe you could buy Street Cannons and put on whatever you want, just keep the receipt....

Again, sounds to me like harley has cozy'd up to the EPA and came out the other side with a scheme to sell a lot more MoCo parts.

"You use our parts, or your warranty is junk."

Also said even after Warranty is up, they won't install any aftermarket Engine Mods. Kept going on about the 15 million they paid.

I was told the same from 3 different dealers. I believe the aftermarket is going to waste a lot of time and money testing and manufacturing aftermarket tuners and pipes and a lot of 17 owners will be pissed they threw away their warranty. The EPA is watching MOCO and will not let up.

Once again I fail to understand why they should be forced to warranty anything that we modify after purchase...

if you buy an item then modify how do you expect them to warranty it when it fails?.

Warranties are for non altered items..

He said you won't find a dealer that will break this policy so that's probably why your hearing the same thing all over. He also claimed they would get their Franchise pulled if caught....

Seems like some new sales training has gone out nationwide. My dealer down here in south Alabama has said the same story. Basically any non-dealer modifications void the warranty, and even furthermore that if non-oem bikes they won't work on them.

Might be a good time to start up your own indy shop.

It is sad to see the end of another era in the US. The days of bike building and customizing are now ending, and the only accessories you will buy will be engine covers and body modifications. What I wonder is if they will start not servicing pre-17 bikes if they are not stock as well?

Well they come with 2 year warranty so if you want to mod it then don't buy extended warranty. I do my own maintenance and save receipts. My next bike will be just the factory warranty and no extra warranty will just get trip interruption from insurance company.

For a lousy (to the MOCO) 15 million. It sounds more like an excuse to push Harley parts than the EPA twisting their arm and holding them against EPA guidelines, which I no doubt is also true. But I had a lifted jeep, tires, full exhaust and my dealer would never say no to warranty. Would it be different on motorcycles in general?
