shock question
Looking for a replacement shock for my 2016 SGS. I want to keep the same ride height but need to improve the ride. My wife has a really bad back.
Details are I weigh 125 and ride 50% solo. Combined weight when with wife is 275. Any suggestions on shock to provide best ride?

This is one of the Biggest ask questions on this forum and you will get a varied response based on what the POSTER likes, including me. I have been on here since 05 - others a LOT longer. I am now on my 4th Harley and second touring bike - fist bagger I logged 82K - sold that last year and got a Ultra Low which has the same back end height as yours - I ride two up 98% of the time and often loaded with #45 of total gear - I am 66 years old and 5'6" = boy have I gone the "whats the best back shock" route . I had Works performance on my first bagger and they worked fine AFTER I got them dialed in. when I got this new bike, I gave a lot of thought to Ohlins - called and talked to Howard - for ME, I did not care for him - that's ME.. Others here think he can walk on water and great for them.. I ended up again with Works and they are fine. I have tried to learn all that I could (amateur) about rear shocks.. what finally hit with me is Preload and how it works..
to start with the stock LOW and the SG - we loose .5 inch of travel and though that may not seem like a lot - it can be.
for a shock to be set up proper - it MUST be in that 'sweet' spot - kinda like floating in the travel band - preload puts some pressure on the shock - when you get on the bike it continues to go down - now we ride - as we hit a bump - the shock compresses then back up to settle... IF there is NO or not enough preload - it will slam back to the top - ouch... to much preload and it will bottom out.. at best we will have about 3" on a stock length (NOT yours or the LOW )of travel in our rear shocks... setting preload and then as we get on the bike - the springs and shock with then travel in that sweet spot area... I know confusing...
If your wife back is an issue.. finding a rear shock that will keep that Low back end - will be work be not impossible... Works - Ohlins and a few others can work.. - call them and talk to them, see who fits with you - plan on spending $600 + and then learning all about preload. good luck on your search..
Have you tried the search button on this topic?
BTW - even at 5'6" and OLD, lol.... I went with full length Front and rear shocks.. I wanted all the travel I could get...
