Default Need a new belt

Dealer just showed me some damage to my drive belt. Said about $800 to replace it. Does this sound about right? Think an indie would be much less? Only 25500 on the limited. How hard to do myself?

You have to remove both inner and outer primary. Which means clutch and chain assembly . Also Need the right tools .

I think it cost me about 550$ at an indy. Get the heavy duty belt while you're at it. Don't know the PN, but HD branded.

Thanks. Kinda what I thought. I'll check with an indie when I get home. 180 miles from where I am now.

And loosen the swing arm pivot so you can slip the belt in between.

Changing the belt is a time consuming & like others said, need special tools. I recall that many have used the HD side car belt / trike belt for the new one. At dealer labor & parts retail prices, $800 would be about right . Get an Indy to do it if you can.

im thinking harley charges about double what you can find at an indie. I paid $400 to have it replaced on a sportster a while back at my local indie shop. Thats something i wouldnt try to do myself, but i am a terrible mechanic, maybe for someone with the right tools and a manual they could do it. Not me! guaranteed it would be towed in the end lol.

It's really not hard and you can do it yourself if you buy the one special tool you "should" get which is the socket for the nut that retains the front sprocket.
Some get the sprocket locking tool as well but you can do it with an impact with the belt hung around the rear sprocket (tight-ish) and the rear tire on the ground.
Need that, torque wrenches, a primary locking tool (wood works), and basic hand tools.

If your current belt is not frayed or torn on the outside edge, say it's got a small hole in it in the center of the belt, you could probably run that belt for life....

Got a pic of the damage?
