Default FP3 & Cam?

Looking for some feedback as to experiences with the FP3 tuner and a cam addition. My FP3 has my soon to be installed S&S .551as an available cam, but I wondering if I'm leaving much on the table using a canned tune and auto tune verses a "good" dyno tuner...

Overall very happy with the FP3 & Stage 1 upgrades...Decatt, PM Super Gasser Intake and S&S MK45s...

Do you know a "good" dyno tuner? If so, my guess would be you're probably leaving some performance on the table if your "good" dyno tuner actually knows how to tune or just downloads a map and tweaks a few things. Do you already have another tuning module like a TTS, Power Vision, Power Commander or another EFI tuning module besides the FP3 because I can pretty much guarantee you you're not going to find a dyno tuner that can dyno tune your bike with the FP3. If you don't have one of those other EFI tuning modules, then you have to ask yourself if the additional costs of the tuning module and the dyno tune are going to be worth the additional performance gains you may or may not get with a dyno tune.

I have andrews 48 installed with an fp3. previous to the fp3 i ran the 48s with a PC V.

the bike with a tune on the PC V ran like crap and mileage was mid 30s at my avg speed of around 80

switched to fp3. contacted v&h, followed their suggestions on base map, three auto tune sessions and bike, starts, idles and pergorms better now than with PC V.

mileage is low 40s and this is with no increase in heat or with a decline in performance.

in my opinion as long as you are staying under .600 lift the fp3 should work fine.

You're over-thinking this.

If you already have the FP3, and you know your can swap is supported, just ride. If the resulting ride pleases you you're all set. If not, find a dyno.

As always, if you need the opinions of strangers, then you haven't yet researched the options well enough.

Your right it is done deal.. bought and sold. No need for my post or much of the stuff on the Forum.

I post for fun and to learn a bit from the experiences of strangers. I consider the opinions of strangers part of the research...some of more value than others...

I've done a couple of cam swaps using the FP3. The FP3 specifically supports certain cams in their library of maps. I put the 117 Kit in my Dyna and tried that map, it was ok but my experience with FP3s, and I've had several, is that canned maps that are close to your set up work pretty well but I've not had much luck getting a good auto tune on the more radical or non library maps. I had my 117 dyno tuned for that reason. Ran like a rocket and no more idle problems like I had with the auto tuned FP3 map. Finally it is perfectly ok to ask questions on this forum, don't let anyone put you down for that.

I have an FP3 with andrews 57h and a $yno tune. But believe I should have auto tuned and just got a $50 dyno at a rally.

Personally I would avoid dyno tunes with any tuner you do not know. There are "tuners" out there that will take your money just to add a canned map into your bike. I avoid tuners at rallies, some of them just want to sell you stuff. Ask around. Good tunes often run about $300 for a decent tune, maybe more depending who you go to. I would be particularly wary of any tuner who asks you what numbers you expect to get out of the bike. My local guy is magic and charges $300

Did you ever get your cams installed and what was the result with the FP3 tune?

Cams are in and I've put about 300 miles on the bike. I haven't run auto tune yet. Bike starts, idles, accelerates and decels fine. Running with V&H intake, power duals, cam and Monster rounds from the drop down on the FP3. My Seat of pants dyno feels more grunt down low. Don't feel the need for auto tune, but I'm sure I will get around to trying it.
