Cutting out the back panel, gutting the cat and rewelding is the way to go. Too much chance on leaving a small part in that breaks off and goes into your engine
On my last bike I bought an oem already done off ebay for 125. Now then I had the original and the gutted one. Gave them to the new owner

Plenty of threads on this forum with differing opinions. I personally think its easier to cut out and reweld. I would have done it myself but liked the idea of keeping the orig pipe.
Too each his own, had I done it myself I would cut it out and reweld, It would take less then an hour and I know it would be out. Drilling it, not as fast
