Yes, even though they are packed in brine or vinegar, they can and will go bad.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids while you recover...

Mine never have, but then, they are never around long enough to go bad. I love to sit and eat them out of the jar whilst watching tv.
But according to Momma, they are 'bad' when you buy them.
Sure there weren't some E coli or salmonella 'boogers' on them?
(Don't think they can survive the 'picklin' process, even tho my brain did, sort of )
And NO, I don't know, nor do I want to know, what they taste like the second time around. I like mine semi fresh out of the jar, Thank You.
Hope it clears out prior to showing up at the office or jobsite.
Wouldn't have been the jug of ta-kill-ya you washed 'em down with, would it? Jus' aksin'.

that sounds NASTY...

Since they are pickled they aren't supposed to go bad so I think there is something wrong with this picture. If you bought them in a can and the can was buckled or puffy or let off gas with you opened it then they could be seriously bad as in botulism. This goes beyond simple food poisoning and you need to get to a doctor.

On the other hand if they were just in the fridge a long time then maybe they were left out for a while and got some bacteria in them.

I'm like Gumpmeister... mine don't last to long at my house. I buy the cans and put 'em in a jar in the fridge. There's always a jar of jalapenos in my fridge and I use 'em in a lot of stuff. I keep a back up can in the pantry for when the jar gets low. Can't be without those little suckers at my place...

But seriously, you may have a mild case food poisoning that will pass in 24 hours or so (and just be a little more nasty because of the source) or you may have something more serious. What else did you eat besides the jalapenos? And yes, drink plenty of fluids - water and/or gatoraide. It'll just keep coming up but a least you won't have the dry heaves and you won't get as dehydrated.

Hope you get better soon...

I think they are bad when you open them fresh.

Throwing them up is better than a bad case of the green apple two step after eating a bunch of hot peppers.Click the image to open in full size.

I think everything can go bad.

Except for a twinkie.

Even though they are packed in brine to retard natural spoilage, once opened the oxidation continues and they will break down further. Couple that with airborne bacteria every time they're opened (penicillium is always in the air, that's how you get green patches on bread and cheese). In Culinary school, they preached to us over and over "When in doubt, throw it out"

They only go bad in my gut...then a scoop of ice cream eases the pain.
