I was wondering what to do with american flags that are no longer in good condition, over the years i have purchased flags for my porch and as the elements have taken there toll on them i replace them with a new one and put the old one in my garage......so what to do, as i do not believe old glory should be just tossed in the garbage. Any help, suggestions?

Walmart takes old flags and disposes of them properly. You can also try your local VFW or American Legion. If that fails flags that are beyond repair are to be burned.

Reason: wrong
In addition to the above mentioned also try your local Boy Scout Troop. If I recall correctly they do the Flag Retirement Ceremony.

Some of the fire departments around me have special mail boxes that are painted red white and blue and have a sign on them saying they are for retired or damaged flags.

Boy Scouts is your best bet. It gives the younger scouts an appreciation of our flag and teaches them the proper respect it deserves. Our troop loves to demonstrate this procedure.

+1 on this route.
they get to learn from the experience.
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
i have approached several local businesses that are flying torn, and tattered flags, and asked that they consider a new flag. most usually do, and respond that they hadn't even noticed the damage.

I'm just happy that people are actually replacing them. It really burns me when people leave the same flag up and almost all the stripes are coming undone with ravels on each end. Faded so much that you can see a bird through it...I just wanna find those people and bring it to their attention to take care of it. Good call on this thread....like it alot!!
