Default time for my first oil change?

Hello,
I bought a 2014 Sportster 1200 this summer. Only 400 miles when I bought it. I bought Red Line oil for the engine and Red Line trans oil. I have 900 miles on the bike now. Do I have enough miles on the bike to change the oil, or do you think I need more miles for the rings to seat. Getting chilly here in Mass now!

You should have received an owners manual with your bike. If you don't have one you should be able to download one from the H-D website, just go to the Owners tab. That will probably tell you to change engine oil and filter at specified intervals, or annually. So yes, the time is right! If you plan on doing all your own servicing then also get yourself a factory service manual.

Change it ! I'd have changed it the day I purchased the 2014 bike, but thats just me.

Another "just me" change (engine oil only), would happen again upon putting the bike up for the winter, regardless (almost) of the number of miles on the oil.

Completely agree! I'd have changed the fluids on that Sportster the day it came home. When my '13 Wide Glide was brand new she came off the dealer's floor and had the factory fluids changed out as soon as I did RPM break in drills and pulled her in to the garage; there was 20 miles on the ODO

Due to work and the poor weather I'm sadly going to have to put the bike up for winter today, there's only 500 or so miles on the VR1 SAE 50 in the engine but it's getting changed out.

69bigblock, the majority of break in happens almost immediately; those rings were either properly seated or not by the first 20 miles which is why I always use the MotoTune break in method...

I see the mototune method thrown around like gospel. Anyone ever figure out who Pat McGivern is and what credentials he has? Or are guys just blindly following a "break in " method they found on the internet?

Red Line does not recommend running V-Twin Transmission Oil or Heavy Shockproof in a Sportster/Buell transmission.
