I am getting ready to change my oil again (10k service) whenI did it for the 5k service oil ran out (everywhere)when I removed the filter. I thought I remembered seeing some ideas people came up with such as a 2 liter bottle around the filter. Any suggestions on containg this oil so as not to make a huge mess again?? Thanks.

The best and cheapest method I have found is to use a 1 liter soda bottle. Lay the bottle on its side and starting at the bottom end of the bottle, cut off the upper half of the bottle about 3/4 of the way up to the bottle neck. Slightly loosen the filter just enough so you can just turn it by hand and then slide the remaining portion of the bottle up under the filter and remove filter.

 

Did my first oil change on a bike ever this weekend. I used a milk jug and cut the bottom out of it and cut a channel for the wrench to fit into it so it could reach the filter. Cutting the channel also allowed the container to colapes (sp) around the filter. End result it caughtabout 4-6 oz. of oil and not a drop hit the floor. A little dribble down the sensor, but that was it.

After reading the coke bottle idea, that might work better. The smaller curvitour (sp) of the bottle would be a better fit around the filter.

That task pizzes me off everytime I do it. This time I'm going to poke a hole in the bottom/out partof the filter and one in the top for air to get in. Put a funnel or whatever under it and let it drain out. Then I will remove the filter from the engine when it's empty.That way I should only have a couple of drops to clean up. fishafly: I just use a standard metal strap oil filter wrench that's made for small auto oil filters. Works fine and clears the crank sensor without problems.

I use a filter cup wrench, available at most auto parts stores in various sizes. Attaches to a 3/8 ratchet, no chance of sensor damage.

That's exactly what I was thinking about doing. Has anyone tried this yet? I'm planning on giving it a shot this weekend.
