does anyone use straight 50 or 60 wt oil?
just had my '03 ultra tuned on a dyno. and I notice more top end valve train noise when the motor gets good and hot. I've been using mobil 1 20/50 and tried amsoil 20/50 , but it still sounds noisey to me. so has anyone used straight weight oils to quiet their top end noise?.,,

I know some people swear by straight weight, but I've always figured it was a trade-off. Straight weight is basically the same viscosity throughout the temperature spread. The extra "thickness" at startup results in less protection exactly when the motor most needs it. The 15w-50 or 20w-50 is only a "lightweight" oil at colder temps, and is a 50w at anything above 100C, IIRC. To me, that means I get the benefit of greater startup protection, easier starting, and still get the benefit of the 50w at running temps. One of the companies has a 20w-60 that might be of interest to you. I think it's RevTech.

Red Line has 20-60 for shovel-pans or high temp areas, I was going to use it this summer but their **** is too hard to get, they are pretty tight *** about letting anyone sell it so its limited availability or mail order. I live in Dallas, was going to start using their stuff but I had to drive all over the metro to get the 20-50 and the shock proof, if I cant find it without that much crap I may go to something else.
Amsoil had 60wt racing oil I may try that this summer, but its only good for the summer, to thick for winter they say, not multiple viscosity.
Amsoil is also coming out with heavy grade gear oil that might give Red Line a run for ist money, I will give it a shot after I get some opines and delve a little deeper.
Amsoil isnt that easy to find these days either, but I know of several places I can get it in the metro, Royal Purple is an easy access too.
Why make fine oils and then make it hard to find for the consumer? Seems bass ackards to me.

whys do you feel it wont make the top end quieter? the oil looks thicker when its cold, and looks as thin as water when it gets to 192 degrees. I would think straight 60 wt wouldn;t thin out.,,

Pococj pretty much answered your question in his post.
