Default How much oil in a Fatboy?

Ok Bill, here's a reasonable question...no set up...this time.

My owner's manual says with oil and filter, 3.5 quarts of oil to fill up for an '05 Fatboy (uses NO oil BTW). I've been putting in 3 quarts.

I'm fairly sure that 3.5 quarts of oil would over fill the system....right or wrong and how much should I put in?? Mt. Cheaha HD dealer says about 3.25 quarts. But then, what do dealers know? I need to know, cause I need to make a trip to Wal Mart.

Thanks and enjoy your harrassment free day.

Howl,

Wolf

I know the manual says 3 and a half. But on my bike (04 Standard) an oil change with filter is just a little over 3 quarts. I put 3 in and run the bike for a minute or two, shut it off, then top off to the full line on the dipstick. Bill

Ok, Is it safe to enter here now?

Usually when you change the softails, there is a bit more than 1/2 qt left in the oil galleries and cam chest/sump combined. Using 3 quarts will get you just about on the full line most times. You can do the total oil change if you are **** like me and Dave which removes all that dirty oil and will keep the new oil cleaner... https://www.hdforums.com/m_254963/mp.../tm.htm#254963

Yes, TCSTD, you are always safe with me although I intend to often cast doubt and dish out healthy humor with you. Just think what it would be like if I didn't like you! Thank you for the straight answer. I can deal with that and I thank you for sharing your superior technical knowledge. It's a shame you aren't as good looking as Heather and there are other factors you can't compete with Heather on..... Have a peachy day. More to come.

Howl,

Wolf
