Im surprised that I can buy Harley Super 5s at a reasonable price from my dealer, if not I would use an Emgo or hiflow.

All well made throw away filters, no guess work, take it off and throw it out every change.

Then ... if your REALLY one who wants to get EVERY single last micron of metal (hardest & most damaging) by far, the best you can get, every single last micron with no restriction, is a Magnetic Oil Plug from Goldplug. Problem, solved. Last forever, cost less then $12.00 shipped, no snake oil claims, just simple truth.

Any size magnetic piece of metal will get stuck to it, no matter how small, just wipe it down every oil change. I know my 14 RK has a magnetic plug, however the Goldplug's are WAY more powerful.
Also have one in my Durango truck, sometimes its a challenge putting it back on as the magnet pulls your hand and the plug to the oil pan as you try to screw it back in.

I recently got into a Heated debate on another forum about oil filters (not an HD) and I am always surprised just how much time and energy people put into buying filters that are not OEM. I have a 2002 HD, I have always used HD filters (except for a short time that I went with Amsoil, than they stoped making them in black and only chrome so I went back to the Black HD filter) I have read and watched people test the HD filters and they are really good filters (as are the other brand OEM filters) so I am not one of those " I only buy HD stuff" guys. I would understand if they were priced badly, but $9 for something most people change once a year? (I do average 4 oil changes a year between my 2 bikes). Makes no sense to me. Now HD has started selling plugs at $12 for some reason so I will be using Champions next time (luckily I buy 6 filters and 8 plugs at a time so I can avoid dealerships so I am set for a while anyways)

I run NGK spark plugs and Napa Filters
The 5 Micron Napa filter for a Sportster is a 7148 in black or 7348 in chrome,I pay less than 4 bucks for black and less than 6 for chrome.
Spark Plugs are NGK 3932 (DCPR7E) are less than 3 bucks ea and the Champion 810 (RA8HC) (6R12 HD) are less than 2 bucks each.

I have been in the business for 39 years so dont expect to see these prices at home.

Isn't all this filter debate meaningless until someone shows the taken apart interior components of an engine with 100,000 miles using "Brand X" oil filter? That, or sending a sample of the used oil out for analysis, and comparing the results "apples to apples" with an opposing brand.

The parts would need to be studied with a powerful microscope to determine wear, scratches, etc., and comparisons made with the stock HD Filter under the same conditions.

FWIW, I use a Wix 7148 Filter, with a FilterMag magnet on it. http://www.shopfiltermag.com/product/mb/ Same exact filter as a NAPA PS7148.

The Oil I use in the primary is Amsoil #ARO-1G, which is not the generic "Motorcycle" oil. Oil specs in the HD Manual for the 2011 RKC 103 TC are stricter than the usual Amsoil bike oil offer can meet. My local NAPA guy orders it in for me.

At any rate, I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, or 3 months, whichever comes first. Very cheap insurance in my opinion.

Having said all that, without taking my engine apart and analyzing everything, I dunno. All I can say is 36,400 miles thus far on this bike and these oil/filter conditions, and all looks pretty good. See you again at 100K if I keep this bike that long.

Bob

Because they are not in the business of making filters, they are in the business of selling filters.

If I have not researched this thoroughly, my apology. My question is are most aftermarket filter model listed here interchangeable for most touring models? Thanks

I was using the k&n filters from O'Reillys ($9) but I could never seem to get them of with out a problem. The part where you put the socket on the K&N one will snap of when you try to remove it. Then I have to poke a hole in it and spin it of with a screwdriver.
Lately I have just been using the black Harley filters. Only $6 bucks at the local dealership.
