Question Spectro Oil -

On another forum they recommend the spectro so I went searching for it and I went to the only place I could find within a 20 mile radius the other evening and I about fell over - No kidding this is what they quoted me - BTW it was a Yamaha shop who would have to order the Primary and trans oil.

Platinum 20w50 $15 @ quart ( 4 quarts)
HD Primary Chain $9 @ quart (2 quarts)
HD platinum 6 spd trans oil 75-140 $22 @ quart (1 quart)
And There is a shipping charge of $15

So when I add in a HD filter and washers @ $16 , to change all my fluids it will cost me $137 (with tax and S&H) WOW! And I am picking up the oil at the shop, turning my own wrenches and disposing the old oil. I think that is a little much to change oil when there are other options -

A few Questions -
1. How does Spectro Compare in performance with Amsoil?
a) Engine 20W-50
b) Transmission 75W-140
c) Spectro has a specific primary oil - does Amsoil?

2. How does Spectro compare in price with Amsoil?

3. What is the difference btwn Amsoil and Spectro that would warrant the cost?

Thanks

Russ

Whew, those items are just a little pricey for my pocket book. Stick with what works and shun the snake oil, it'll save you a ton of money and a whole lotta grief.

Use amsoil or Mobil 1 Vtwin from autozone go with the least expensive as all are so close in specs that you won't notice the difference.

M1Vtwin 20w50 engine
M1 75w140 gear oil -trans
M1 Vtwin 10w40 primary

Same with amsoil.

There is virtually very little difference in all of these oils.

If you want a good dino oil try www.bradpennracing.com

Thats way too much.
Try going to Amazon.com and search for oil in the automotive and motorcycle links.
Good prices and sometimes free shipping.

Whew! To bad for Spectro if those costs are on the average. I hear it's great stuff, but so is the Mobile 1 synthetic products I use at a much lower cost.

I just switched to Amsoil, mainly becuasde it is easy to find, local Fleet Farm has it $10.95qt and I use a WIX filter from O Reilys $4.75. When I drop primary and trans I'll be using Amsoil or Redline if I can find it local.

I had planned on using Mobil1 but cannot find 20-50 for Vtwin so went to Amsoil instead.

Anyone use http://www.schaefferoil.com/705_racing_oil.html . A local swears by it. NAPA sells it. Not very pricey. Mostlikedly cause they don't advertise like the big corparations .

I found the tranny oil and the engine oil for Amsoil - what should I buy for the Primay? What is the weight? I was told that 20W50 was too thin -

10w40 or 20w50 either one will work. some say the 20-50 make the clutch feel a little grabby.

Thanks - A buddy of mine said to stick with the HD primary - that there is nothing wrong with that in the primary- it is just the transmission and the engine that I really need to worry about. Thoughts?
