Default Overfilled Oil Resivoir

Can someone explain the danger in too much oil? A few weeks ago, I was at the low level mark on the dipstick. The manual says that is about one quart low. I put in a half quart, ran it around the block, shut it down, let it sit for a few, checked the oil, barely any difference. Added another half quart, ran through the same excercise, and now it is well above the full line.

I asked around to see if I should drain some of the excess oil out. Was told not to worry as long as it less than a half quart over (probably bad advice). Yesterday, while riding down the freeway, the dipstick popped out and now the entire rear end of the bike is drenched in oil. I am guessing that too much oil leads to too much oil pressure? Is it possible that I damaged any other seals in the engine as well?

You will see it come out of the A/C even when it's at factory "level. Always run mine about 1/2 qt. low.

Get a turkey baster and suck out the amount overfilled. OR it will eventually puke out the air cleaner. Take your pick. You didn't damage anything.

I agree with the other guys....about all it will do is pop the dipstick out due to expansion when it gets the oil hot. You need to make sure your dipstick plug is in good shape and fits snug. I always wipe any oil off the throat of the fill neck and the rubber on the plug as well. If the plug gets a little wear on it, it will tend to pop out for no reason at all. The engine does not care how much oil is in the tank and a bit low or a bit high would be okay. The newer models have a screw-in dip stick...dressers anyway. How many years did it take Harley to figure that one out!
