Default Oil Coolers & Pinging

Anybody know if a cooler running engine (using an Oil Cooler) will be less susceptible to pinging?

Absolutely. Temp and spark knock ( detonation ) are directly related. I dont know how much of a temperature reduction you hope to gain by installing an oil cooler, but any reduction in temp will help. Personally, I would be looking at the overall tune of the engine before I would spend money on an oil cooler to reduce spark knock.

I agree. There is something causing this condition.
Instead of buying a cooler, tune the engine.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm gonna go ahead with the cooler. The UC runs pretty hot in the summer, especially when I'm down south where the temps are in the triple digits. I'm doing this cause I want the engine running cooler. The main reason is not to try to cure pinging, but just thought it might help anyway.

I've been talking with the guy who did my 95" build and the tuning. He's made some adjustments and the pinging isn't a huge problem, but it's there from time to time when it's hot out, at sea level and when I can't get high octane (>90) fuel. So I'll continue trying to get him to richen it up some. They seem reluctant to do this, I guess because of the emissions.

With >90 octane available to you i'd be asking him what the compression ratio is in the motor.

Smitty,on my 07 the factory style cooler lowered temps but not enough to cure pinging/detonation.Only a fueling upgrade will help on that issue. The two items will improve your bike along w/Air flow and exh upgrades.
