I read a tech note from an oil company a couple years ago. It was for conventional oil. They said 3 years is tops under any condition because it will turm waxey.

I think synthetic would last longer.

Blackstone tested a bunch of oil in cans that were decades old, they tested fine.

Fossil lubricants have a shelf life or is it the additives that have a shelf life?

After years of in-depth study, it has been realised that an oil's shelf life is in direct correlation to any new product being introduced by the oil company. The "old " product then becomes useless and no good to use. Just like when synthetic oil came around, regular oil never could trusted again.,,
