The Castro 20W50 you refer to is it the labled "Castrol V-Twin"? if so it specification meets HD's API SG and should be an excellent oil as is AMSOIL.

What Fatboylust said so eloquently.

Castrol is an excellent brand, and I used their fossil GTX for years since the '60's. Even today I use it in my primary, and it's a great break-in oil. Any name-brand synthetic (Castrol, Mobil1, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Redline, just to name a few) will serve you well. Buy based on availability and price, and don't worry about it. One might carry you a few miles past 150k, another a few less. Forget the hype and go for it.

I am not condoning or condeming Castrol as they have been around a long time. Just for your info. The AMSOIL Study of Motorcycle oils Rated Castrol V Twin 16 out of 16 (one being the best) It failed miserable in tests like rust protection , gear wear test and the like. You can read the paper at www.amsoil.com and make your own decision. There are 15 oils better than castrol. I guess, in the long run, you get what you pay for. It is more readily available for sure. Motul is the most expensive MC oil you can buy but it is rated 9 out of 16. Go figure.

I don't care what the Amsoil chart says.. Castrol is great oil.. If the Castrol oil you want to buy says its for a V Twin use it..

Look on the bottle before you buy it.......it should say API SG, SH/CF JASO MA on the label. If not then it's not air cooled motorcycle rated and you should not run it in extreme heat or past 2500 miles.

FWIW, I don't use Amsoil but it is excellent and will out perform Castrol. [8D]

The Amsoil test was conceived, commissioned, and paid for by Amsoil. I've seen independent tests (e.g., Motorcycle Consumer News and American Iron magazines) that show Amsoil scoring well, but not as well as they claim in the tests posted on their website. There is no perfect oil, or a perfect oil for every aspect of a given application. All name brand 15w50 or 20w50 synthetic oils should perform very well in a Harley, and it doesn't need to be motorcycle-specific.
