Have a trip planned to Carlsbad in March from AZ to Carlsbad and would like some information on roads from Yuma to Carlsbad but not on the freeways. No time constraints, just want to check out the area.

We have done the Yuma to SD thing many times. To get out of Yuma, You can go North up to Quartzite, then over to Cali from there. Not the best quality of roads but doable. If you don't mind some highway, do the 8 west till Salton Sea exit, head North and come the back way up the mountain through Ocotillo desert. Nice ride with plenty of twisties. You will hit Julian at the summit and follow the road to Ramona. Take the 78 to Escondido, there are decent back roads to Carlsbad from there through the Elfin Forest. Enjoy the ride. Some beautiful country.

 

Agreed, 78 will be your best route.
