pulled oil lines and cover, pulled the scavenger idler gear, put 90* needle nose on scavenger drive gear teeth to turn gear, gear moved about 3*s, then the gear would spring back,, amount I figure the pinion gear spring will allow,,,, peanut cover coming off next,,,,,,

I found nothing wrong mechanically, airlock possible,, reassemble piece by piece,
breather hole clean, breather tube screen clean and timed
no, oil does not return,, scavenger gear, woodruff key and shaft keyway in proper working order reassembled.
pulled light spring and check ball, no oil, [oil bag has 2 quarts in it] so I'm suspecting possible air lock.

found the problem!!!!!
on the oil return fitting is the rear chain oiler I bottomed out the needle back in 68 [installed O-ring chain] and forgot about it. when I blew out the lines last week and found nothing wrong I moved on to the next possibility, this time I blew into the fitting attached to the oil pump outer plate worked ok, blew from the plate out through the fitting and blocked !!
removed the rear chain oiler needle and blew out a chunk of carbon the size of a pencil lead and about 3/16ths long,,
reassembled and oil return was as it should be,,
bugs on my teeth after supper if everything falls into place.......thanks to hd forums and everyone's patience
