Default Early 50's lower legs ?

Buddy is starting on getting his pan chopper going . Been sitting since the 70's. Took the lower legs in to have them chromed. Said they were pretty heavy, thought they were steel. The ones he got back are aluminum . I can't remember for sure but i thought they were aluminum . Can someone set us straight. Thanks
