Default Opinions about tank costs please

I have an 05 Classic, and it has decals on the tank. I'd like to remove them and add some tank badges. It's black, with twin silver stripes around each side. I have a local painter who does the Houston area HD dealerships work, in addition to whatever you might want. I talked to him about it, and he says that it will require a total sanding/respray since getting the the decal off will leave a depression in the color coat. He's quoting $400. This includes restriping. What say you?

I can't comment on the price, but what he describes for the work is on the button. When I had my tank done it was part of a total bike repaint, so I don't have a price for just the tank.

Cool

My pleasure old chap! I had the original '10 tank decals removed and fresh older ones installed, as per my '90 Evo.

My .02. I had my tank painted - wanted to be rid of the red striping and painted HD name on my otherwise vivid black tank. Was giving an outrageous price of $850 from a local indy shop to r/r the tank and have it painted. Spoke to a local body shop who I had dealt with before and was given a price of $175 (discounted from $250 they would normally charge, since I was a repeat customer) - long story aside, it came out spectacularly. Now, I didn't have a decal, but they did sand and prime the sides, and i believe just a light sand on the top and other surfaces... With decals your prep is likely more extensive. So $400 doesn't sound that far out of the ballpark.

$400 is what my painter charges to fix/repair and paint a Harley tank...

Default I exstended a 09 brown tank off ebay and shot the whole bike in gold base red

I added a little gold leaf and fading pin stripping so it's hard to say about the price.
