Default restoration help on paint color

I'm restoring my dad's 73 sportster xlch, it's painted a blue color but I don't know what color exactly it is. He passed away in 98' so I can't ask him.

I don't know if its the same color as this 61 but it looks really close, someone please help.

Not sure about bikes as modern as 1973, but I do know the older bikes have no method of identifying original paint color. Nothing in the VIN to identify. The best you can do is find a list of colors that were correct for your model and year, and then pick the one you like. Maybe someone here knows better then me about 1973. I am sure they had a blue that year, find the paint code and go for it. Good luck.

You can contact HD Customer Care, give them the VIN and they can give you two or three pieces of info about the bike; not much but it they will verify that the VIN is good and tell you the original color that it had shipped from the factory. I do not know if they have the paint code but they do have the color ...

Here is a cool article about the first Harley assembled at the York plant. It is a 1973 xlch in Sunburst Blue.

Were you able to get the color code for Harley Sunburst Blue 1973-1975 paint?

No but I got a body shop to digitally scan it and the paint code the came up with is 8p1 prime #194390. I believe that's a Dupont color number. Any body shop will be able to reference that number.

If you want to see my bike now check me out on Facebook, project steel horse. I've got a pretty detailed build. I've gotten to ride it some this year.

Default paint color by vin

Talked to Harley they can't tell by the vin on bikes before 1987. They can give a list of colors for your year bike but they won't give paint codes.
