I have a 2007 Ultra Classic with severe gear whine on coast in all gears. It seems to be getting louder. There is very little metal showing on the drain plug and in the drained oil. It has had several IPB replacements for noise but there have been no total failures. I am using Lucas SYN. 85w140 gear lube. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 

Are you still using the stock automatic primary chain tensioner? This is more then likely the cause of your IPB failures. I would also look at your main bearing in the trans these are also prone to failure.

 

Mark, Thanks for the response. I do have the stock auto tensioner. Can you recommend a replacement ?.
