Default Outer cam bearing: Roller VS. Ball bearing

Hope this is the right spot....I'm replacing outer cam bearing with the tensioner job. ( '02 88" TC - stock chain drive cam - carb) . Replaced inners and outer ball bearing cam bearings... was given ball bearing to replace roller bearing with? they're not HD bearings also. Is it OK to change from ball to roller? guy from company I bought from said they change because the ***** are tougher than roller?

Might want to put this question in the engine section.

Agree with Mark; post in the Engine/Mechanical section but here is the answer. Roller for rear cam and ball bearing for the front if using chain drive; ball bearings front and back if using gear drive. Nachi 6004-C3 ball bearing; Japanese and good quality; use the OEM 8983 roller for the rear; don't think there is a cross over alternative for that one.
