Default transmission noise?

I have a 2009 Dyna Fxd, just under 25,000 miles, over the last two or three days I've noticed a weird noise coming from the transmission. It's not the usual "harley ticking" it's louder. As I was riding today I smelt something burning, it smelled like burnt rubber but only when I was in 4 and 5 gear. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated

Open the derby cover (or just remove it) and if it stinks like hell warmed over, I mean really bad, worse than just burnt oil, then you've got a stator that's going out or gone out. Yeah, it's not the tranny, but as far as I know the tranny has nothing 'rubber' in it or to do with it.

I've got the same bike, same year, and my stator went out earlier this past summer. It's an easy enough thing to check, as I said you just need to open the derby cover and take a whiff. If it don't smell like plain oil, but smells just awful, the stator is going or has gone.

Primary vents through the tranny so like tarsnake said if the stator goes it could be putting out an awful smell.
