I plan on changing my clutch cable with one that has 3.25 inches free play . My original one has 2.75 inches free play. Is there a way to make it work. I was thinking of adjusting the clutch to about 1/4 turn out instead of 1/2 to 1 turn.

I haven't measured the free play on my 1990 bike, but if it is 2.75" I cannot see any easy way of adjusting out that extra 1/2" except via the mid-cable adjuster, if it will allow that. On our older bikes the adjustment of the clutch can be quite critical (I've owned mine since new) and getting it right is fun enough, without trying what you describe!

Why are you using the 'new' cable?

I installed it last night. Like you said ,I had to bring the mid adjuster out almost all the way . I readjusted the clutch behind the derby cover 1/2 turn out, maybe a bit less. Took it for a quick ride around the block . Its perfect. Cant go very far its winter up here in Canada.
