Default won't shift from first to second

My 02 road king has been sitting while I was on a federal vacation for 6 years. I just started it today for 1st time. Went for a rip and my bike wouldn't shift from first to second. I kicked it hard and popped clutch and no change. Even when not running bike won't run through the gears past nuetral and 1st. So I am not mechanical at all, and as my holiday was 3$ a day pay I can't afford a shop. Please keep it simple for me to follow steps. Thank you and I appreciate the help and will pay it forward to all hd riders.pce

Pull the top cover and have a look. Do you have a service manual? It could just be a shifter pawl adjustment or maybe a bent shift fork. You won't know till you have a look though. Double check you linkage as well, the rod going from your foot shifter to the transmission should be free at both ends and not binding. It should also be parallel to the bike. The shift lever on the transmission should be tight, if it is loose and flopping around this will also cause shifting problems.
