Default Tapered mainshaft to splined?? good idea?

I have a custom project and am using a 88FLT as the rolling chassis. I want to use the 5 speed but need to extend the main shaft. I was told the tapered shafts are not very strong and probably could not find an extended tapered shaft anyway. So questions is should I convert to a splined shaft? Baker says I can use a 90-94 main. and I can get a 25mm or 45mm extended. Anyone have experience with this stuff?
