Default Main Gear Seal'

Well that was fun SAID NO ONE EVER ,Tore 05 WG down today to replace the leaky main seal and quad seal. I have been trying to amp myself up for this task for a year. Not to bad till I got to the freeking sprocket nut I was beginning t0 think this was welded on. Finally went and borrowed a 3/4" IR impact = no problem. Going to order my IPB (hi-torque) and slap it together this week. My race did not walk is what has me baffled but you could see where the main seal was leaking, are these known to just start leaking? Mainshaft has no play and the bearings all look great.

I had to drill that nut off when I did my 30T. Just curious, what is a "quad seal" - always trying to learn...thanks.

Yeah, those seals will start to leak, they live in a bad neighborhood, dirt and debris flying around in there...

I suggest you replace the pulley spacer while you are in there, I never take a chance on them unless they are almost new.

That seal that goes into the end of the main drive gear is very often overlooked when chasing down a leak, you will hear guys saying "I changed all the seals and it still leaks", but they missed that wedding band seal...

H D Pilot:

The quad seal is a square shouldered seal that goes between the pulley spacer and the big ball bearing that supports the main drive gear.

Quad seal is item 23 in the illustration:

ok 1 more ? Does the quad seal get pressed in or does the sprocket spacer push it in when installing the sprocket and nut ?? My old one was just kinda resting in place no effort at all to pull off.

The quad seal just gets slid over the shaft of the main drive gear. The spacer will trap it in place.
