Left stranded
Hello all,
New bike owner here. Bought an 02 Springer private party. No clue what the guy before me had for a service record. Dropped all the fluids and replaced with SYN3. Had the bike out, about 250 miles since fluids were changed. From a traffic light, took off in first, shifted to second and had nothing. Thought maybe hit neutral so went up again....nothing. Got to the side of the road and tried getting the bike going and nothing. Can find neutral. Started getting a small leak on tranny side of the primary.
Motor runs/has power. Transmission seems to shift through gears. Just putting them together is the problem. Drained the oil and seems to look ok(no metal or anything). Popped the covers and from the looks, theres no damage.
Left sitting on the side of the road for a bit since I was an hour and some change from home.
Anybody have any ideas????

Look at the shift lever on the transmission, it may be loose on the shifter shaft.
Check all the shift linkage, make sure it is secure and not binding.
Check clutch adjustment and clutch cable adjustment.
The worst case scenario is that the front sprocket nut has come loose.

Welcome to the Forum: It sounds like a clutch issue. I would loosen the clutch cable and adjust the clutch basket cold and set cable free play. If still an issue I would have tech check the basics or pull the primary cover and check. Is there metal or clutch material on the primary drain plug?

Thanks for the help so far. I opened up the primary and all looks well. Compensator, chain, and clutch all look good. No metal in the primary. Clutch appears to be working smooth.
After getting more into it, when in gear it is able to be pushed around the shop. Can see the front drive gear rubbing into the transmission housing causing wear.
Looks like next step is removing the inner primary to further investigate.
Im learning all this as I go so I hope y'all don't get bothered by any questions I come up with!
Thanks again!
