First Post and Harley Newbie. Please be kind. I am in need of some tranny help

I purchased this bike (1995 Sportster 1200cc - 15,000 miles) about three weeks ago. First week bad weather, second week out of town, this is week three. Was riding it Sunday when suddenly it would not shift gears and is stuck in what I believe to be 4th gear. I've tried operating the shifter while rocking the bikeback and forth with it not running. No luck. I did not hear or feel anything let go when this hapened. Trying to down shift it acts like it would if you tried to downshift while in frst gear. Up shift is like it is in 5th gear. It acts as though some sort of pin has shaered offand whatever the shifter rod actuates is no longer attached. Hope this makes some sense. There were no problems with it prior to this happeneing. It was shifting just fine. Clutch operates well.

Any chance this could be something minor. I fugure it probably isn't minor but hope springs eternal when you don't yet know the problem.

I've never worked on a Harley but have worked on other motorcylces and cars. I'm borderline competant, certainly not an exprert mechanic. Any chance this can be fixed in the grage or will I be introducing myself the local dealer's service departmenton Friday??

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
