Default '04 Dyna Tranny Failure

Yesterday on way home from work on my '04 FXDP with 5-speed, I pulled away from a stop and when I got to 3rd, the tranny made a noise & simply dropped out of gear. Like it popped into neutral. Engine ran fine, clutch felt fine, but it was a drifter from then on. Had to push it the last 1/2 mile home. I could shift it into 1st, neutral, and 2nd, but no farther up. No power to the belt in any of those positions. Any idea what might have occurred, & how extensive repair might be? I've searched but haven't found similar problem. OEM tranny operated perfectly up to this point. 56K miles, tranny oil changed every 4K mi with Redline HD. Thanks for any suggestions.

Check the shift lever back on the transmission, make sure it is not loose on the shifter shaft.

OK Dan, will check it closely. Although, I could feel (or thought I could) it slipping into 1st, then neutral, then 2nd with the shifter. It felt normal shifting. Just wouldn't shift up beyond 2nd, and no response at output when I released the clutch regardless of shifter position. Although, now I think of it, when I shifted it to neutral (or what I thought was neutral) the neutral light did not illuminate - and it has always worked just fine. Not sure what that means (if anything). Thanks for tip, will report back when have time to work on.
